At first glance, to the untrained eye, its movements may seem exasperatingly slow a deliberate dance that defies all modern notions of efficiency.
Yet it is precisely in this deliberate slowness that its deepest and most transformative teaching lies. Yoga is not slow out of inertia, but out of intention.
It is an active lesson in learning how to observe, a re-education of our perception that forces us to shift the paradigm from quantity to quality and value.
The person who chases quantity seeks external novelty. Their well-being depends on a constant stimulus coming from outside. If the stimulus stops, boredom or anxiety arises. The Taijiquan practitioner learns to find novelty in the familiar. It is a vertical journey, not a horizontal one. Instead of running across a vast territory, we learn to dig a deep well where we are. In that depth, we find the fresh water of value and quality.

More trips, more books read (or, rather, skimmed), more social connections, more projects. It’s a “bucket list” that turns into a frantic race against time, a horizontal pursuit that expands us across the surface but rarely allows us to go deep. In this race, experience becomes a consumer item. We photograph it, post it, archive it… and then rush toward the next one. But have we truly lived it?
Slowness in yoga is a pedagogical tool.
When we move quickly, the body operates on autopilot.
We rely on momentum, superficial muscle memory, and habitual tension (our tension habits) to complete an action. It’s efficient for “doing,” but disastrous for “learning” or “feeling.”
In speed, the body becomes an object we move; in slowness, it becomes a subject we inhabit.
Practicing yoga in the city offers a calming space to disconnect from the constant noise and fast pace, allowing you to reconnect with your body, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of inner balance despite the urban environment.

It also provides an accessible way to incorporate movement and mindfulness into your daily routine, helping you stay grounded, improve your overall well-being, and create moments of peace even in the middle of a busy city life.
